Irving Penn

Irving Penn is known and is famous for a number of his still life images and for many valid reasons. He sees objects that seem so simple and puts them into a different perspective for his audience. I never knew that simple things like a piece of wood or a glass could convey so much meaning and different ideas. I see the common theme that he often adds a very vintage look to many of his images and I think that this adds much texture and allows your eyes to be drawn to things that don't necessarily stick out. I also think another theme that many of his images have is that they are often messy images that are suppose to look like "candids", but they look so put together at the same time.

There seems to be many images of different types of flowers with many different types of colors. I think that these draw my attention because of the wide variety of different perspectives he gives to these images. The thing that seems so interesting is the post production of these images. He makes the lighter parts bright and the darker parts dark but with much contrast and texture. Another thing that he focuses on is the viens and the lines within the flower, this is where my eyes go to because i never see a flower in this perspective.

Another set of pictures that I find very interesting and give a different perspective are the ones that involve food. I think that we use food to fuel our body and never actually appreciate it at times, even the simple things. I think that he uses similar post production as he did for the flowers because these pictures allow you to look at the details and realize things you didn't before. As mentioned before many of his pictures are messy but the way his angles the pictures and edits them allows them look put together and this is expressed in the pictures containing food.

Overall, I think that Irving Penn allows you to break down the bigger picture and take different things into perspective. You notice the smaller things in his pictures that you don't in real life and allow you to focus on specific things. I think that this is something that many other photographers should look at and take this into consideration when doing post production of pictures.
